BASC: Retired gamekeeper takes top honours at Crufts

Monday, 10 March 2008 12:00 AM

A retired gamekeeper from North Wales and his dog "Tingvelle Morning Mist" have taken the top honours in the gamekeeping classes at Crufts 2008.

"Tingvelle Morning Mist" who is a three year old English springer spaniel and is usually known as Tess, won the BASC Nickerson Memorial Trophy to qualify for the best in class award with its owner Dylan Thomas, who lives near Bala in Gwynedd.

The classes, run by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, are a showcase for working gundogs at the world's most prestigious dog show. In all more than 440 dogs were entered in the gamekeepers' ring at Crufts 2008.

Gamekeeper winners from different classes throughout the day are judged in a final show in the main arena to determine which dog will take the Northesk memorial trophy.

Dylan Thomas said: "It's marvellous to win but it hasn't sunk in yet. I've been competing in the gamekeeping classes at Crufts for ten years now so it's great to get the top prize this year. I've got two more dogs coming up - one is only 13 months old and took second place in one of the classes this time so I'll definitely be back next year."
