BASC: New Forest keepers teach young shots about deer management

Young shots from Hampshire have been learning about deer management from the Forestry Commission's New Forest keepers this week.
The day, which started with a presentation in the Verderer's Court, gave the youngsters the chance to visit a deer lawn, take part in a conservation activity (lawn clearance) and visit the range to learn about the importance of rifle care, safety and zeroing. The day culminated in a visit to the impressive New Forest deer larder.
The event was organised by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) in conjunction with New Forest keeper Maarten Ledeboer who spoke to the Young Shots about the importance of his role in deer management for the forest.
BASC Regional Officer Jenni Thompson said: "The Young Shots were really privileged to enjoy a day with the keepers who offered them a wealth of knowledge on how the New Forest is managed. It was great to see them get involved in all the activities with such enthusiasm and I think they all went away having learnt a lot about deer, the forest and its management."
