BASC: Lords and Commons draw at clay shoot

After a closely fought competition, the House of Lords and the House of Commons drew at this year’s Lords vs Commons clay shoot. High gun was Andrew Robathan MP, a defence Minister, with 53 points and Lord Brougham and Vaux was the Lords team’s best shot with 44 points.

The event, which was held at Holland and Holland shooting ground in Middlesex on 24th June, was organised by BASC and sponsored by Pol Roger and William Evans. The competition comprised eight individual stands of different simulated game targets followed by a team flush.

The guest speaker at lunch was the Duke of Norfolk who spoke about the work he has been doing at Peppering Farm on his Arundel Estate to reintroduce grey partridge. In the 2003 spring count he had three pairs and this year he had 337. The Duke won the Gold Purdey award for his conservation efforts last year.

BASC’s political officer Sam Edwards said: “Thanks to the support of our sponsors the day went extremely well and was a lot of fun. The instruction was absolutely outstanding and we were well looked after by all at Holland and Holland. The Duke of Norfolk gave an informative and inspiring talk which everyone enjoyed."

The Commons team was made up of Bill Wiggin MP (captain), Graham Brady MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Edward Garnier MP, Richard Graham MP, Andrew Robathan MP, Mary Macleod MP and Mark Garnier MP. The Lords team was made up of Lord Crathorne (captain), Lord Brougham and Vaux, Lord Dear, Lord Bilimoria, Lord Redesdale, the Earl of Shrewsbury and the Earl of Erroll.
