BASC: Cheshire gamekeeper takes top honours in national shooting contest

Tuesday, 26 April 2011 12:00 AM

A gamekeeper from Cheshire has won first place in a national competition organised by the UK's largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

Nick Beavis came first in BASC's Gamekeepers' National Clay Shoot Final, which was held at the association's Gamekeepers' Fair at Catton Park, Derbyshire. He was awarded the Lord Lichfield Challenge Trophy for gamekeepers and £50 prize money. Mr T Thompson from Staffordshire took second place in the competition. Mr W Hodson from Norfolk and Mr G Taylor from Lincolnshire came joint third.

Mr Beavis said he was "very happy" with his success. He took second place in the competition last year and came first in 2009. The gamekeepers' competition ran alongside an open 50 bird sporting competition which Mr Beavis also came top in, winning a shotgun worth £800.

Glynn Evans, BASC's game and gamekeeping officer, said: "The clay shoot was a good competition and congratulations to the winners and to everyone who entered. Thanks must go to Clive Bramley of Doveridge clay sports and all of his staff for allowing us to use the facilities and run the gamekeepers' competition alongside the main shoot and for putting on a challenging layout."
