Comment from Breast Cancer Care on BMJ research in to lymphoedema prevention

Statement from Breast Cancer Care on research published in the BMJ looking at the effectiveness of early physiotherapy to prevent lymphoedema after surgery for breast cancer.

Tara Beaumont, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care, said:

"Lymphoedema, reduced shoulder movement and pain can be distressing side effects of breast cancer surgery, potentially affecting a person's mobility, body image and self-confidence.

"While this study raises the prospect that early physiotherapy could reduce the risk of developing lymphoedema, larger scale research is needed in to its long term effectiveness.

"There is support within the NHS for women, and men, affected by lymphoedema, as well as a range of advice and information, including free publications from Breast Cancer Care, on how to reduce the risk of developing the condition.
