BHA: The Right to Object?

Right to Object?

The All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) is hosting the launch of the Humanist Philosophers’ important new publication to discuss issues such as:

Should there be legal exemptions for religious groups – and are there justifications for exemptions without religion?
Is equality law oppressive or vital to protect liberty?
If burqas are permitted in the workplace, why not bikinis?
Is conscientious objection an absolute right?

More and more cases of people claiming the right to have exemptions from equality law and policy are being heard in the courts and are causing a media storm.

This pamphlet looks to philosophy and ethics as well as the practical impact of this fast-moving issue.

Chaired by Peter Cave, Chair of the Humanist Philosophers, Lecturer at City University and Open University. Confirmed speakers include:

Professor Richard Norman, Emeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Kent
The Right Reverend the Lord Harries of Pentregarth, Peer and Former Bishop of Oxford
Dr Alan Haworth, Senior Research Fellow, Human Rights and Social Justice Research Institute
David Pollock, President of the European Humanist Federation

If you or a colleague would like to attend, please contact BHA Head of Public Affairs Naomi Phillips naomi@humanism.org.uk or 020 7079 3585 for more details.

Right to Object? Conscientious Objection and Religious Conviction is being published by the British Humanist Association.
