Annual Review 2008 - Support to enjoy life
This has been a year of change and development for Avenues. We are a charity that supports people to enjoy their lives and have worked to make that clearer in the way we describe ourselves and to support that aim across all parts of the organisation.

Active Support: Report Summary
Two years ago, we piloted personcentred active support training in six of our registered learning disability services. We trained our staff in partnership with The Tizard Centre at the University of Kent. Part of the training included
observations and questionnaires to staff about how they supported people. This information was collected before the training, and again a year later, and an assessment report using this data was published this summer.
This summary has some of the highlights of that report. It evidences the impact active support has made to the lives of the people living in these services. It shows they have more choice, are more included and have greater independence. Their lives have changed.

Community Support Services: Young People
We support young people to enjoy their lives within their communities, at times that suit them. Young people are encouraged to develop their skills, confi dence and self-esteem and are supported through transition to a more independent lifestyle.
Our support offers families or guardians a break, enabling them to manage the support for their son or daughter more easily. Support is offered at daytimes, evenings, weekends and school holidays so that young people can remain living in the family home.

Avenues to Challenge
The Avenues to Challenge project was set up to look alternatives to residential group homes for people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour in Kent, including the opportunity to rent homes of their own with the option to buy through shared ownership. Full and easy read versions of the reports can be found here.
