Autism Cymru: Launch of Deis Cyfle

Thursday, 6 May 2010 12:00 AM

Autism Cymru will be marking World Autism Awareness Day by officially launching the new project, Deis-Cyfle!, at the Senedd on Monday 10th May 2010.

Deis-Cyfle means Opportunity in both Irish and Welsh. In collaboration with The Irish Society for Autism, Autism Cymru, Wales' national charity, is developing Deis-Cyfle as a three day training programme and self evaluation tool. It is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Deis-Cyfle! aims to increase employability and provide greater opportunities for school leavers with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, by providing greater knowledge and understanding of Autism. Training materials will be tailored for secondary school teachers, leisure and higher/further education providers and employers of people with Autism. Ultimately, the project aims to enable individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder to achieve their potential in the world of employment, leisure and education.

Working together, both charities will offer a wide range of complementary skills in training, providing in-depth knowledge and internationally renowned practice expertise to enhance the secondary school life of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and enable them to achieve a successful and happy educational and employment future.

NUT Cymru: Fears over the introduction of truancy fines

The largest union for qualified teachers in Wales has expressed disappointment that the Welsh Government has chosen to introduce fines for persistent truancy.

Pupils facing double disruption with Llanrumney closure plan, warns NUT Cymru

NUT Cymru has called on the Welsh Government to ensure that pupils at Llanrumney and Rumney schools in Cardiff do not have to suffer double disruption as a result of closing the Llanrumney site a year early. NUT Cymru’s response to the consultation process on behalf of its members who are teachers at the schools, concluded that whilst early closures would certainly create problems for staff, parents and pupils, there was no significant benefit to be had.

Do not undermine improvements, warns NUT Cymru

Wales' largest union for qualified teachers has warned that introducing fines for parents risks undermining the good work being done to tackle truancy. NUT Cymru says there has been a steady decrease in truancy, culminating in figures published today showing the highest level of attendance in primary schools since the Welsh Government started collecting the data. The Union fears that introducing fines now, as proposed by the Welsh Government, will lead to a breakdown of relations between schools and parents, increasing truancy in the process.
