About Us

As the professional association for those working in the retail motor industry and the Sector Skills Council for the automotive retail sector, the IMI is central to the skills solutions for the industry.

We are a not-for profit organisation with more than 80 years of experience in developing and supporting individuals and employers at every level of the UK's motor industry.
Through IMI membership, developing the standards for qualifications and accreditation we recognise individual's achievements. We help those in the retail motor industry to consistently gain new professional knowledge, skills, capability and professionalism.

Inspiring people to achieve - we are working with schools, training providers and careers advisors to enthuse young people and demonstrate the varied career options available in the sector and also work with employers to encourage continuing professional development (CPD).

Ensuring ethical performance - membership of the IMI is a means of recognising those who are committed to providing an ethical service and are 'proud to be professional'.

Proving competence - We regulate the Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme, the UK's first national and voluntary accreditation scheme for those working in the automotive industry which currently recognises over 25,000 individuals who have proved their skills and knowledge. We also govern the Automotive Management Accreditation (AMA) scheme the first accreditation scheme to address managerial needs specific to the sector. www.automotivetechnician.org.uk and www.automotivemanagement.org.uk

Researching skills needs - we find out what skills are needed by our industry so we can develop fit-for-purpose qualifications.

Helping people and business with training - we help businesses across all four nations perform better by giving advice and support on how they can improve staff skills. To create the leaders of tomorrow we need to improve the managers of today so we work to equip the industry with the skills they need to deliver better performance.

Encouraging best practice - we share ideas, knowledge and experience with the sector and work with our partners to deliver improved performance.

Part of the IMI Group of Companies, IMI Awards is the leading awarding body for vocational qualifications serving the automotive industry. It has a network of over 400 approved centres and over 50,000 registered candidates. www.imiawards.org.uk
