UKAEA - Fusion
UKAEA is responsible for UK's contribution to the fusion research programme at Culham Science Centre.
We also operate the Joint European Torus (JET) facilities on behalf of our European partners under the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA).
The promise of producing power from the fusion of light atoms is enormous:
- An almost limitless supply of the fuels required;
- No atmospheric pollution – no greenhouse gas is produced;
- No possibility of a significant nuclear accident;
- No long-lived radioactive waste.

Our work is supporting the development of the ITER international research device, which will demonstrate fusion in power-plant conditions when constructed.
UKAEA’s operation of JET has been consistently endorsed by European fusion scientists, and an independent DTI-appointed review panel has noted the UK fusion programme’s major influence within the international arena.
We are also encouraging the spin-out of technologies used in fusion research to hi-tech industry. Our Fusion and Industry initiative promotes technology transfer throughout the UK, and we provide direct support to companies based at an Innovation Centre on site.
