The RSPCA works and campaigns on every animal welfare issue and is uniquely placed to offer information and advice from its postion as an enforcer of animal welfare laws, its scientific team and its own label higher welfare assurance scheme Freedom Food.
It also runs high profile campaigns each year. The major campaigns in 2006 are:
Animal welfare Bill: working to introduce the first major over haul of the animal welfare laws in England and Wales for nearly a century
Laying hens and chickens bred for meat: working to ensure that European legislation on these two farm animal issues is agreed to the highest standard and that consumers are presented with the best information to make the choice for higher welfare products
Fireworks: to ensure that only low noise fireworks are used for private displays to prevent suffering to pet animals
Wild birds: to get agreement in the EU to prohibit imports of wild caught birds and replace them with captive bred birds for the European pet market to prevent avian flu being imported and ensure conservation and welfare problems about the trade are prevented.
