Green Homes Campaign

Tuesday, 02, Dec 2008 05:34

We believe the Government should compel private developers to build to the same environmental standards, and timetable, as housing associations. Watch our short film.

Housing associations build nearly one in four of all new homes – around 40,000 every year. Over 90% of those built in 2007 met the Eco Homes ‘very good’ standard.

To help meet its CO2 targets, the Government has said that it intends to make one aspect of the Code for Sustainable Homes mandatory for all new homes. But housing associations and private developers are being held to a different timetable – and housing associations are expected to lead the way.

With three-quarters of the housebuilding industry lagging behind, housing associations will be unable to achieve economies of scale. Supply chains and materials will remain expensive until the whole construction industry is kick-started into action.
