NFU PARLIAMENTARY BRIEFING - WESTMINSTER HALL DEBATE – DISPOSAL OF FALLEN LIVESTOCK

The disposal of fallen stock became an issue in the UK in the period leading up to and immediately following the introduction of the EU Animal By-Products Regulation on 1st May 2003. This effectively banned the previous widely spread practice of burying dead livestock on farm and was based on what the NFU held to be spurious scientific concerns about the persistence of animal disease, and in particular TSE prions in the soil following disposal by this method.
