Background:

The CIA enjoys a long-standing association with the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Chemical Industry and acts as the administrator for the group. As well as organising formal meetings and events, CIA provide ad hoc written briefings for APPG members on issues affecting the industry. Parliamentarians are also encouraged to contact CIA direct for help at any time.

To join the group, please telephone Beri Seel on 0207 963 6787.

Recent Meetings:

The Annual General Meeting 2003 was held at the CIA offices on Wednesday 29th October, when Dr Brian Iddon was elected as Chair of the Group. Over breakfast, members discussed priority issues and actions for the coming year and heard a presentation by CIA on Energy Policy and Emissions Trading.

The industry perspective was given by Robert Longley-Cook, Director, European Issues Management at BP.

In May 2003, the CIA co-hosted a Parliamentary Reception with Dr Ashok Kumar MP, Chair of the APPG, to raise awareness of the potential impact of the EU Chemicals Policy amongst Parliamentarians.

The key speaker at the event was Lord Sainsbury, Minister for Science and Innovation at the DTI. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of the industry, the importance of the Innovation and Growth Team process and the Government's supportive position on EU chemicals policy.

In July the APPG met more formally to discuss the EU Chemicals policy. CIA staff made presentations on the scope of the proposals, and the business impact, with particular emphasis on the possible effects in members' constituencies. Roger Jeary, National Secretary, Manufacturing at AMICUS put forward the Trade Union perspective.
