Technical expertise
The CIWM plays a proactive role in policy development and regulatory guidance in relation to particular waste management activities and technologies, meeting regularly with DEFRA and the Environment Agency.
As the national member for the International Solid Waste Association, CIWM plays an important role in international policy and strategy development. It also participates on a variety of non-governmental committees and support groups working towards specialist projects.

Within the CIWM there is a team of technical officers who respond to day-to-day queries, manage projects, co-ordinate responses to consultation papers and maintain the technical library. The technical team also co-ordinates Technical Working Groups and Special Interest Groups, consisting of members, experts and interested parties. These consider a variety of topics for the purpose, for example, of informing policy, responding to consultation papers, and promoting research and best practice
Topics currently being considered by a Group include: contracts; social behaviour; biological treatment; healthcare waste; hazardous waste; collection, recycling and environmental cleansing; thermal treatment; waste regulation; and waste and resources.
CIWM also produces a number of publications aimed at promoting best practice and helping practitioners keep up to date with the latest developments
