Education and training
CIWM works closely with academic institutions to develop and promote first degrees and post-graduate level qualifications in wastes management and related fields.
It encourages research in a variety of ways, including the award of bursaries and its Scientific and Technical Review, published three times a year.

Key vocational qualifications developed by CIWM include:
Certificate in Supervisory Management - incorporates a wastes management option into the standard Certificate in Supervisory Management taught in many colleges of further education.
Higher National Certificate in Wastes Management - designed by the Institution to develop the competencies required to perform effectively at junior to middle management level in the wastes management industry.
Waste Awareness Certificate – recognises that waste producers need an understanding of the issues within an increasingly regulated environment where they now have much more responsibility for maximising effectiveness in terms of waste reduction, reuse, recovering and disposal.
CIWM’s Structural Engineering Education and Training Scheme is a flexible programme of professional training designed to assist new graduates to acquire the practical skills required to develop a career within the wastes management industry.
CIWM also has a scheme of Continuing Professional Development, with Members and Fellows expected to demonstrate a minimum of 30 hours of CPD per year in a range of related activities.
A comprehensive programme of training courses and events is available via IWM Business Services.
