London 2012 Olympics
CIOB Position Statement
The UK construction industry has an excellent opportunity to showcase all its quality and produce an inspirational platform for those athletes and spectators taking part in the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics. It can make it not only the best Games the world has seen, but also leave behind a legacy that will improve the lives of those in London and of many people up and down the country.
The CIOB believes the 2012 Olympics is the perfect vehicle to promote a career in the built environment. It is the CIOB’s view that if the industry can harness the imagination the Olympics create then we have an excellent chance of recruiting new entrants into construction careers to combat the skills shortages we face.
The CIOB supports the use of temporary and re-usable venues along with demountable grandstands. This not only played a vital part in London winning the right to the host the Games, but is also a welcome sustainable solution that helps minimise capital expenditure and creates a harmony with the needs of the community. The CIOB encourages all sustainable initiatives.
The CIOB is convinced that as an exemplar project the London Olympics should embrace (industry recognised) key performance indicators (KPI), best practice in procurement and showcase the UK construction industry with the highest standard of site conditions and a visible onus on health safety.
According to the Disability Rights Commission there are 10 million disabled people in Britain.
The CIOB recognises that the Paralympics will improve the way London and its infrastructure functions for all people with disabilities, and hopes that the 2012 Games raises the awareness of this key issue and resonates across the UK.
