The Campaign for Science and Engineering is a pressure group aiming to improve the scientific health of the UK.

Our objective is to communicate to Parliament and the nation as a whole the economic and cultural importance of scientific and technological development and the vital need for the funding of this research by Government and industry.

We achieve this by meeting directly with ministers, civil servants and advisers in Westminster and Whitehall, as well as in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast; by

networking with a wide range of industrialists, educationalists, researchers and academics involved in science in engineering; by commenting in the media and interacting with backbench Parliamentarians to keep science policy at the forefront of the public agenda; and by publishing analyses, briefings and responses to public consultations.

Our work is supported by 1,500 individual scientists and engineers and by a wide range of industrial companies, universities, city financiers, learned societies, publishers and others.

We are campaigning for:

1. World class science base

Public investment in research and development should be at least the average of competitor industrialised countries.

2. Research Careers:

Universities and public sector laboratories should be able to compete with other countries and other careers to attract the best researchers.

3. Science Education:

Every GCSE student should have the opportunity to be taught by specialist teachers trained in physics, biology and chemistry.

4. Private funding of research:

Scientific industry should invest in UK economy at the level of companies in competitor countries.

5. Science for policy-making:

Science in government ministries should be funded properly, and there should be no political interference in handling scientific advice on contentious issues.
