The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) is a national organisation providing a voice for black and minority ethnic service providers in government. We have a successful track record of advising government departments and non departmental public bodies. We also provide technical assistance support for voluntary and community organisations and public bodies.

BTEG is a networking organisation supporting over 600 third sector organisations across the country. Organisations from all sectors can join our network by subscribing to our quarterly publication Race and Regeneration.

We participate in a range of governmental advisory groups at the national and regional levels; our research has influenced policy and practice in central government, Jobcentre Plus, Connexions and Learning and skills councils. BTEG recently provided the national LSC with the idea to develop a professional association for equality and diversity practitioners.

Our technical assistance support has strengthened hundreds of small BME organisations. British Gas continues to work with us to improve the number of BME trainees at their engineering academy. BTEG has been one of the main driving forces leading the new BME standing conference partnership which has attracted £750k from the Office for the Third Sector and will provide a national generic voice for the BME sector.

Successes

Advising government

BTEG is a member of six governmental advisory groups which cover education, skills, employment, regeneration and the third sector.

Building Futures Jobs Ecosystem

This innovative government funded pilot has placed 650 people into work from five London boroughs and looks set to achieve its target of 1200 people into work by March 2008. The partners include Talent Recruitment, a private sector employment agency and thirteen frontline BME third sector providers. BTEG’s role is to provide capacity building support for the BME providers and to manage their service level agreements. This project is an excellent example of the public, private and third sector working together.

Working Ventures UK

Along with the National Employment Panel and Public Private Ventures (USA) BTEG has played an important role in helping WVUK to develop practical tools to help third sector providers make the difficult transition from being job seeker focused (supply driven) to employer facing (demand-led). From April 2007 WVUK will be hosted by the NEP.
