Welcome

Action for Prisoners' Families promotes the just treatment of prisoners' families by the prison system and society across the UK.

It encourages the development of, and acts as a voice for, organisations providing support to these families.

Our Aims:

To encourage and promote the development of a nationwide network of support services for prisoners' families

To support the development of existing and potential members in their work with prisoners' families

To be a national voice for prisoners' families and support services, representing their views and directly influencing policy and legislation

To raise awareness of issues affecting prisoners' families

To ensure essential information about relevant support is made available quickly to prisoners' families

We achieve these aims by:

Giving advice and information to those developing services for prisoners' families, and to prison and probation staff

Providing training, specialist publications and resource materials for our members

Organising conferences, seminars and events to address key issues and disseminate good practice

Voicing the concerns of prisoners' families to Government, the Prison Service and other key agencies in order to influence policies that affect them

Offering initial information and a referral service to prisoners' families

Working with the media to increase the public's under- standing of the effects of imprisonment on the family

We are campaigning for:

Improved support for prisoners' families as soon as someone is sent to prison

Advanced rights to privacy, family life and freedom from discrimination for the children and families of prisoners

Improved prison visits, family contact and the involvement of families in resettlement work
