Blair's plane in runway drama

Wednesday, 27, Dec 2006 12:00

Tony Blair's holiday in Florida got off to a bumpy start last night when the plane he and his family were travelling on overshot the runway at Miami airport.

The aircraft had to be pulled back and turned around by engineers, before it taxied over to the gate under its own steam, security officials in the US said. Nobody was hurt and the plane was not damaged.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, the US air safety agency, said the plane took out a couple of lights at the end of the runway but did not go on to the grass or mud.

It is not yet clear what caused the incident, which led to a 45-minute delay on the flight. The prime minister and his family were travelling to Miami to stay with former Bee Gee Robin Gibb for a winter holiday.
