Pensioners should clean the streets to earn extra cash, a Conservative candidate for the next election has said.

Gordon Henderson, who will challenge the Sittingbourne and Sheppey seat, made the suggestion while helping a local council team clean unwanted items from houses in the area.

"I am sure there are pensioners out there who would be delighted to earn a few extra quid and at the same time keep their street clean and tidy," he said.

"I think we have to take a new approach to cleaning up our neighbourhoods.

"One way might be for local authorities to employ pensioners for a few hours each week to keep their own street and alley clean and free of weeds."

Neil, Gloucestershire: Even better, how about providing enough Police to enforce the litter laws, and at the same time educate young people to show a pride in the apearance of their town and community. It works in Europe - one only has to visit, Belgium, Holland and France to see that.

Adam, Suffolk: As the percentage of old people grow, they will have to do a little more work to replace younger people.

Peter, Harlow: Much as I dislike the Tories, he didn't say they SHOULD clean the streets - he actually said they might like to earn a few extra quid doing so. Your headline writer might want to look up the difference between "should" and "could".

Daniel Thayer, Shropshire: Haven't pensioners worked their whole lives in order to be able to 'retire' without having to earn extra cash? Haven't they paid enough taxes to ensure that their local council keep their streets clean? Gordon Henderson is clearly barking mad. Even if there are pensioners willing to clean their streets for extra cash, why on Earth should they? Surely they have worked hard enough to ensure that they should not have to earn extra cash in order to feed themselves or heat their homes!

Timothy J.Oates, Abingdon: Highly commendable, if it results in a reduction in my Council Tax for doing the Council's job for it!
