A clear majority of the public believe tax cuts are the best way to stimulate the economy, a politics.co.uk poll has revealed.

The result comes just days before Alistair Darling unveils his much-hyped Pre-Budget Report.

Sixty-six per cent of politics.co.uk users thought tax cuts would help the economy.

Asked which party would benefit most from the current tax cutting agenda, 58 per cent of respondents thought Labour would come out the winner.

Only 25 per cent thought the Tories would benefit most, and 16 per cent answered Liberal Democrat.

But users were divided over who should benefit from the cuts.

Thirty per cent said the middle-class should benefit.

The elderly and companies were both on 26 per cent, while 17 per cent thought single parent families should benefit.

On the subject of stamp duty, most respondents did not think an abolition of the tax would make any difference to the housing market, with 58 per cent of users saying it would not help.

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of users looked unfavourably on council tax. Sixty-two per cent of users want it scrapped.
