Grocery market report due

UK supermarkets could see changes after Competition Commission reportUK supermarkets could see changes after Competition Commission report

Friday, 15, Feb 2008 12:00

A report from the Competition Commission on the state of the UK grocery market is due to be published later today.

It is expected to contain final recommendations after a two-year inquiry into whether supermarkets' dominance of the sector is undermining choice for consumers.

Supermarkets Tesco, Asda, J Sainsbury and Morrisons account for more than three-quarters of the grocery market, research suggests, while there is also concern at the "landbanks" developed by the sector's leaders.

The report is expected to be published at around 16:30 GMT so it has minimal effect on the relevant firms' share prices. Analysts say it is expected to contain backing for enhanced government regulation.
