The Conservatives have written to Gordon Brown telling him to admit he misled the House during today's PMQs.

Shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Philip Hammond says the prime minister misled parliament when he said Spain was a member of the G20.

Mr Brown made the statement when asked by David Cameron if Britain was the last G20 country to come out of recession.

"Today when faced with a simple and direct question, you chose to mislead the House of Commons by stating that Spain is in the G20," the letter reads.

"This is simply not true. While Spain has attended recent G20 meetings, it is not a member of the Group. Indeed, you explicitly admitted in a press conference last year that 'Spain is not a member of the G20'.

"On Monday, David Cameron took the opportunity on the floor of the House to correct a factual inaccuracy from the previous Question Time. I trust that you too will take the earliest opportunity on the floor of the House to apologise and amend the record."

The spat comes a week after Mr Cameron was forced to tell the House of a factual inaccuracy in his comments during last week's PMQs, which centred around the Islamic group Hizb-ut-Tahrir.
