Former Labour minister Chris Mullin will head the scandal-hit Commons committee charged with investigating miscreant MPs.
The standards and privileges committee's chairman David Curry quit his post last week after revelations from the Telegraph he claimed £30,000 for a second home he only stayed in a handful of times.
On Monday the newspaper revealed another member of the committee, Andrew Dismore, 'flipped' his second home designation allowing him to claim an extra £31,000. He said the change was due to a shift in his working habits.
Sunderland South MP Mr Mullin, who will stand down at the next election, published his diaries earlier this year and is well-respected in the House.
He won praise for his expenses claims after it emerged he only billed the taxpayer £45 for his licence fee - because he still uses a 30-year-old black-and-white television set.
