The chancellor has received a ringing endorsement from one of the most glamorous women in the world that he is the man to succeed Tony Blair as prime minister.

When Gordon Brown met actress Angelina Jolie at a press conference in Namibia, the pair indulged in a shower of compliments for each others' efforts to make the world a better place.

The American star, more used to spending time with Brad Pitt, praised Mr Brown's £8.5 billion pledge for global education, while the MP for Dunfermline East called her "inspirational" in her role as a UN goodwill ambassador.

When asked if Mr Brown should be the next prime minister she eventually admitted: "I hope he does have a chance to do more and more good things, and I think he will if he has the chance. So yes, I would like to see it."
