The effects of the economic crisis may negatively affect the number of quality apprenticeships, MPs cautioned today.

It is the latest suggestion the current economic climate could halt Gordon Brown's plans for mass apprenticeships.

Commenting on the latest draft of the apprenticeships bill, MPs said the promise of available apprenticeships to all suitably qualified young people would be compromising to the overall quality of the placements.

"If apprenticeships are to offer meaningful career opportunities, they must be of good quality, where apprentices are treated well and earn a decent wage," said TUC general secretary Brendan Barber.

"Legislative powers to regulate and promote apprenticeships give the opportunity to do just that, and it is important we get it right."

MPs recommended that the bill be redrafted so as to observe and report the quality of apprenticeships.
