Every secondary school in England and Wales will receive a free DVD by renowned atheist Richard Dawkins to celebrate the anniversary of Darwin's Origin of the Species.

The speech was originally delivered as part of the professor's 1991 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for children, and is being distributed by the British Humanist Association with funding from the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.

"Increasing young people's understanding of science has never been more important," Professor Dawkins said.

"The lectures explore a number of themes and tasks young people to think critically about the world around them and to explore the awe and wonder that the magnificence and complexity of the natural world, which has evolved over billions of years, can arouse."

Andrew Copson, BHA director of education, said: "We know that some teachers already use these lectures as end-of-term videos, and are confident that their versatility and breadth of topics covered will allow teachers across many subject areas to make the best use of this important resource in their own ways."

Prof Dawkins is a divisive figure in the debate over religion, especially after the runaway success of his bestselling book 'The God Delusion', which is credited by some as having revived a lagging atheist movement in the UK and America.

This year is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dawin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his seminal text 'On the Origin of Species'.

  • "Unfortunately it is not free. It comes with baggage that includes an implicit message that a beautiful universe = rational thinking = atheism... and this is just a foot in the door for a marketing machine aimed squarely at the hearts and minds of impressionable kids. A beautiful universe implements a renewed reincarnation, not a rehashed atheism. "By celebrating atheism they are also celebrating a belief that their brains are primitive"D J Wrayhttp:///www.atotalawareness.com"

  • "The only baggage that comes with the truth is the responsibility to live your life accordingly. Brains are not primitive - they are the tools we have to work with. Primitive are the ideologies and thought processes espoused by religions that were begun many years ago by people who didn't have the understanding of the natural world which we have today. Atheism has nothing to do with "celebrating" an ideology - it is merely accepting and striving to understand our universe as it is without resorting to supernatural explanations."

  • "Firstly, these videos are amazing. I watched them about 2 years ago and the only things to have dated are Richard's appalling shirts. This was a long time before The God Delusion so Bible bashers should be at least happy to hear that these videos don't push atheism. @ D J Wray You're an idiot. Atheism cannot celebrate the belief that our brains are primitive because it is not a belief system. You accuse Dawkins, but it appears that you are the one mixing up evolution and atheism. That said, evolution shows us that out brains are advanced as they have ever been (anything but primitive) and if they continue in the direction of the last couple of hundred years they will continue to advance. I checked out your site. Pseudoscience FTL"

  • "So why do you have a photo of The God Delusion?"

  • "I was wondering why there was a big shot of The God Delusion, too - it seems a little misleading to me. The Royal Institute Christmas lectures I've seen have nothing to do with trying to prove or disprove the existence of God. As an atheist myself, I'd say that giving every school a copy of The God Delusion would be bordering on inflammatory behaviour; the Christmas lectures, on the other hand, don't get involved in the belief debate at all. And regardless of his religious orientation, Dawkins is a fine scientist and an entertaining speaker. So, yeah, why the implication from the image that he'd be pushing an antireligious agenda?"

  • "Money is always issue number one. But let's not forget the battleground fought most fervently, that of the American youth. These are children born under the present contending superpower. Let's not forget that they need to recognize superstition from reality. Thank you for what you have done and hope that you can do more to change the course of history here in my own country. I am doing what I can with the limited influence I have. "
