Relief after climate change agreement

The Bali breakthrough came after The Bali breakthrough came after

Saturday, 15, Dec 2007 12:00

The breakthrough agreement reached at the UN climate change conference in Bali has received a mixed response.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn said it was important not to underestimate the importance of the talks and stressed the importance of their inclusiveness.

UN climate chief Yvo de Boer said the 11,000 delegates at the conference had provided the "political response to what scientists have been telling us is needed".

But Liberal Democrat leadership candidate and environment spokesperson Chris Huhne said the talks had produced a "score draw" rather than a victory.

Friends of the Earth director Tony Juniper dismissed the deal as "very disappointing", saying developed nations had let down developing states by not providing a "destination" to the roadmap.
