Labour was badly hit in last night's local elections in England, losing 273 seats and control of 18 councils so far. These included Bury, Barrow and Blackburn in the north, and Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Croydon in London.
The result was a boost for new Conservative leader David Cameron, however, with his party taking the same number of additional seats and winning control of an extra 11 councils.
The Liberal Democrats have made little headway, although the night was a success for some of the smaller parties, in particular the BNP, who have 19 seats but are expecting more, and the Greens, who increased their share by 16 seats.
