Gordon Brown took time out from his leadership campaign today to offer his assistance to the family of missing toddler Madeleine McCann.

He meet with Madeleine's aunt in the House of Commons today, where he offered his "practical and personal support" and said he would help "in any way he can".

Philomena McCann said the chancellor was "extremely helpful" and offered her family advice in the search for Madeleine.

Ms McCann was in Parliament as a guest of Glasgow Central MP Mohammed Sarwar.

She has been lobbying MPs to use their influence to maintain pressure on the Portuguese authorities.

Many MPs have been wearing yellow ribbons to show their support for the McCanns.

Asked about Madeline during prime minister's questions, the deputy prime minister John Prescott said the thoughts of the whole House were with her family.

Today, friends of the McCanns launched a 'fighting fund' to help meet the costs incurred by the hunt of Madeleine.
