Eric Joyce resigns from Labour

Eric Joyce has tendered his resignation from the Labour party, after pleading guilty to assault.

The Labour MP cut a downcast figure in the Commons as he read a personal statement.

"Clearly I have a number of personal issues to address and you can be assured this will take place," he said.

"I would also like to inform the House that I have today tendered my resignation as a member of the Labour party."

The decision will not make a significant difference to his constituents. Joyce had already had the whip removed the day after the events took place.

Reading from a sheet of paper with his head held low, the Falkirk MP apologised to several MPs, including one he had headbutted, the various police officers who helped restrain him, and other onlookers.

"I do of course have other apologies to make, including to my constituents," he said.

As he sat down several MPs patted him on the back.

Joyce was also given a 12-month community order for attacking Tory MP Stuart Andrew, two councillors, and Labour whip Phil Wilson.

He also received a £3,000 fine and was ordered to pay £1,400 to compensate his victims.

He pleaded guilty to four charges – one of which was assault by beating.
