The odds: Hung Parliament certainty in punters' mind

The likeliest result come May 6th will be a hung parliament if bookies are to be believed.

Encouraged by the Liberal Democrats' continued strong performance in this tight election, punters have been heavily backing the possibility of no party gaining overall control.

William Hill spokesman, Graham Sharpe commented that "our hung parliament odds are now the shortest offered in the history of political betting.

"Punters are backing it as though the votes had already been cast and counted".

Indeed, according to Paddy Power, the possibility of a hung parliament is no longer a pipe dream. The bookies shortened their odds on a hung parliament from 8/15 to 4/9 echoing William Hill's 8/13 to 8/15.

The only doubt seems to be who the Liberal Democrats will choose to make an alliance with. Paddy Power have put forward 9/4 odds that the party will form a coalition with Labour, offering 11/4 odds for one with the Conservatives and 5/6 with neither.

William Hill have cut the odds for a Lib-Con alliance offering 9/4 from 11/4 while odds for a Lib-Lab alliance have shifted to 1/4 from 1/3.
