Miliband unveils the ‘new generation’

Ed Miliband has unveiled the rising stars taking on junior roles in his shadow Cabinet.
The new Labour leader made Chuka Umunna, who became an MP in May, and Anne McGuire, one of the ‘Blair babes’ of 1997, his private parliamentary secretaries.
The move is a sign that the long-running hype around Mr Umunna in left wing Labour circles has been recognised by Labour’s new leadership.
Other new MPs joining the front line team include Rachel Reeves, Johnny Reynolds, Tom Greatrex, Michael Dugher, Luciana Berger, Gloria De Piero and Gemma Doyle.
“”I am delighted with Labour’s front bench team,” Mr Miliband said.
“I am particularly pleased that I could bring in a new generation of talent, whilst also using the experience of a broad range of Labour MPs.
“This is a team from all parts of the party, which will robustly hold the coalition government to account.”
As revealed earlier in the day, leadership contender Diane Abbott, who came last in the contest, has become shadow minister for public health.
The wave of such fresh young faces to the front bench will counterbalance the more experienced figures filling the senior Cabinet positions, all of whom served in government at some point during Labour’s time in power.
It also helps underline Mr Miliband’s ‘new generation’ agenda, which he has been promoting since he won the leadership.
