UK debt 'hits £800 billion'

By politics.co.uk staff

UK national debt will hit £800 billion early this afternoon, according to a pressure group.

The right-of-centre Taxpayers' Alliance said its travelling 'debt clock', an LCD display on the side of a coach touring the country, would hit the £800 billion mark at 14:17 BST today.

"The national debt is still rising fast, and it poses a real threat to Britain's economic future," said Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the Alliance.

"The government's £6 billion cuts so far are a welcome first step but they must go further, faster."

According to the group, the national debt continues to rise at a rate of £5,169 a second.
