Two big beasts of the Labour party, Gordon Brown and John Prescott, have started to position themselves for their political future as the dust settles from the general election campaign.

Mr Brown is reported to be angling for a role in Labour's campaign for the Scottish parliament elections.

The Times reported that Iain Gray, Labour's Holyrood leader, had exchanged notes with Mr Brown, who is still MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.

"One of the things he has said to me is that he wants to help in the [Scottish] campaign. So I would expect that, yes, he will help," he said.

Meanwhile, former deputy prime minister Mr Prescott formally launched his bid to become treasurer of the Labour party on his blog yesterday

"During the general election I travelled 5,000 miles on my Prescott Express battle bus," he wrote.

"It became very clear to me during my journey that we have an enormous job to do in rebuilding our party."

Mr Prescott vowed to use the internet to generate a mass movement Labour party, but his task will be difficult, with the party's finances severely depleted following the cash-for-honours affair and the general election.

The previous treasurer, Jack Dromey, husband of Labour's acting leader Harriet Harman, is stepping down following his election as MP for Birmingham Erdington.
