Liverpool Wavertree: Lib Dem staff sacked over Facebook comments

The web campaign organiser for Liberal Democrats candidate Colin Eldridge has been sacked for leaving obscene comments about religion on Facebook.

Adam Webb responded to an article about the rise of creationist theory in education by posting a request for “all religious people to just f**k off”.

Mr Webb, who was spearheading the online campaign to win the Wavertree seat for the Lib Dems, also attached a link to an article saying certain people should be “banned from breeding”, including “vile women with too many kids”.

The Liberal Democrats said his comments were “totally inappropriate” and Mr Webb was sacked immediately.

Liverpool Labour leader Joe Anderson told the Lib Dems of Mr Webb’s comments on the social networking site and he has asked Mr Eldridge to apologise to the people Mr Webb may have offended.

In a letter to Mr Anderson, a Lib Dem spokesperson said: “I would like to make it clear Mr Webb made these remarks before his time on the campaign and we were unaware of them when he was appointed.

“Colin Eldridge would like to make it clear he disagrees entirely with the comments.”

Labour councillor for Kensington and Fairfield, within Wavertree contstituency, Louise Baldock, wrote in her blog: “Mr Webb was obviously a key member of the campaign team, handpicked. It says a lot about the calibre of people Eldridge has working around him.”

A spokesman for Mr Eldridge said: “Mr Webb was never a spokesman for the Liberal Democrat campaign in Wavertree and has already ceased helping it. We asked him to leave as soon as we were aware of them.”
