Cameron mocks Brown in the Commons

Tory leader David Cameron launched a humiliating attack on the prime minister during today's government statement on its future policy proposals.

In his response to Gordon Brown's Building Britain's Future report, Mr Cameron attacked Lord Mandelson's statements saying the government had run out of time to push the sell-off of parts of Royal Mail through the Commons.

The business secretary claimed the bill was "jostling for space" in the government's legislative programme but many analysts are convinced the move has more to do with a potentially huge rebellion against the move by Labour backbenchers.

Mr Cameron mischievously offered to use the Conservative's opposition day debate on the subject.

"Would you welcome that? Mr Cameron asked the prime minister. "Just nod."

At this point Mr Brown studiously talked to chancellor Alistair Darling, to his left, as the Tories jeered loudly across the Commons.

"Is there anybody out there?" Mr Cameron asked, to the laughter of the benches behind him. "Is there anybody in there?"

Mr Brown in turn attacked the Tory leader for not making any policy proposals.
