Former environment minister Elliot Morley is expected to become the next MP to stand down after the pressure on him over his mortgage claims reached fever pitch.

He has already been suspended from the Labour party over the £16,000 he claimed on a mortgage which did not exist and Scotland Yard are still weighing up whether to launch investigation against him.

He has arranged a meeting with his local party association this evening, after which he is expected to announce his resignation, making him the thirteenth casualty of the expenses scandal.

The Scunthorpe MP is currently still refusing to confirm the reports however.

"I will release a statement after I have spoken to them," he said today.

Mr Morley said the £800 a month claims could be put down to "sloppy accounting" but lawyers insist the claims could constitute a criminal offence.
