Hillary Clinton addressed the National Assembly of Northern Ireland this morning, after holding talks with leaders.

Mrs Clinton held talks with the first minister, Peter Robinson, and the deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness, today, in what was evidently a well-humoured and warm session.

The three chatted animatedly, before Mr McGuinness told journalists: "Hillary Clinton has been a true friend to all of us.

"Her continued political and emotional connection with us is something that has been to our enormous benefit."

The US secretary of state is urging the parties to come to an agreement on the devolution of a new justice ministry - the final stage of devolution, but one currently facing problems.

Sinn Fein wants powers transferred by Christmas while the Democratic Unionist party is taking a more cautious approach.

"May God bless you and sustain you in this important work," she told the Assembly.

Yesterday, Mrs Clinton met with her British counterpart, David Miliband and the prime minister, whose photo-call with her was interrupted by his children.

Both parties affirmed their commitment to the struggle in Afghanistan ahead of an update to parliament on Wednesday in which Mr Brown will explain developments over the summer break.
