The Cabinet may meet at the Olympic site today, as part of Gordon Brown’s plans to have sessions around the country.

Downing Street has refused to confirm the location of the meeting. But it is known that Cabinet is meeting today, and the presence of various ministers around the Olympic site has led most political commentators to assume it will meet around the east London location.

Ministers fanned out around the area this morning praising various government-run initiatives tied to the Olympics – an event Mr Brown has branded “the greatest opportunity for this country in a generation”.

It will be followed by meetings with G20 finance ministers over Friday and Saturday, as the PM gears up for the Pittsburgh G20 meeting in three weeks.

Earlier today, Mr Brown told trainees for the BBC he would be willing to take a pay cut to help in the recession.

“We’ve frozen our pay but the most important thing is that we make a decision as a society. I would take a pay cut.”

The session marks the beginning of the return of business as usual for political parties.

A long summer break will soon end when conference season begins later this month.

The Liberal Democrats’ conference takes place on the September 20th, followed by Labour on the 27th and the Conservatives on October 5th.

With a general election taking place no later than June 2010, the three main parties are treating conference season as the start of a general election campaign.
