A controversial video game allowing players to fight in the battle of Falluja in the Iraq war has been abandoned by its publisher.

Game publisher Konami announced the game earlier this month, earning widespread condemnation.

The game intended to reproduce one of the bloodiest and most controversial incidents in the conflict, which claimed the lives of 38 soldiers and 1,200 insurgents.

“After seeing the reaction to the video game in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it,” a Konami public relations official told asahi.com

“We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there.”

The devlopers will now have to see if any other publisher will take on the project.
