Asbestos sufferers demand compensation

Hundreds of victims of an asbestos-linked condition are marching on parliament today to demand compensation for their condition.

The demonstration comes as the House of Lords ruled the condition – called pleural plaques – is no longer eligible for compensation.

It will be followed by a meeting in parliament’s grand committee room in which trade unionists, MPs and lawyers debate how to continue their fight.

Pleural plaques are areas of fibrosis on the inner surface of the ribcage and the diaphragm.

Around one third to a half of people exposed to asbestos have calcified pleural plaques thirty years after exposure.
