Ofgem finds energy initiatives work

Energy efficiency initiatives are saving customers about £350 million a year and cutting total domestic carbon emissions by one per cent, the industry regulator says today.

A new report from Ofgem finds about ten million British households, six million of them on low incomes, have benefited from energy saving measures in the past three years.

Provided as part of the Energy Efficiency Commitment, these measures include cavity wall insulation, energy efficiency boilers and energy saving light bulbs.

Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan said the measures not only helped the environment, but also helped cut energy bills.

"Improving household energy efficiency is the most sustainable way of tackling fuel poverty especially during a time when fuel bills for all customers are rising," he explained.

He urged customers, particularly those struggling to pay their bills, to contact their energy supplier for help on making their homes more energy efficient.
