Countryside Alliance makes final hunting appeal

Hunting supporters are today taking their final challenge to the ban on hunting with hounds to the House of Lords, the highest court of appeal in the UK.

The Countryside Alliance is challenging the court of appeal decision to uphold the ban, saying the legislation used to push it through parliament is itself unlawful.

The alliance says the 1949 Parliament Act is unlawful because it was only voted by the lower house, unlike the original 1911 Parliament Act.

Countryside Alliance head Simon Hart said: "The challenge to the Parliament Act is not about hunting - it's about the constitutional arrangements of our country and respect for the law."

Mr Hart said if the alliance lost it would mean people lived in a country in which there were "no checks or balances to protect the public and constitution of this country".
