Nurse prescribing 'safe and effective'

Nurse prescribing has been a success in the eyes of patients, doctors and nurses themselves.

Research published for the Department of Health by the University of Southampton examined the impact of nurse prescribing two years after its introduction.

Patients said accessibility was a major advantage of obtaining medicine from a nurse rather than a doctor.

The majority of nurse prescribers were either confident or very confident in their prescribing practice, and doctors and nurses were working well together, the survey found.

However, some nurses were unhappy with the limitations of the current system, and the lack of access to computer-generated prescriptions.

Chief nursing officer Christine Beasley said: "The findings of this research indicate that nurse prescribing is operating safely and effectively in practice."
