Baroness Blatch dies

Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Lords Baroness Blatch has died of cancer.

The baroness passed away at 0700 BST this morning, after battling pancreatic cancer since Christmas 2003.

Baroness Blatch served in John Major’s government as Education Minister 1992-1994 and then Home Office Minister until 1995.

Conservative leader Michael Howard said that the political world would miss her enormously.

Mr Howard said: “Emily was a wonderful friend and a fantastic colleague. She was loyal and dedicated. She worked throughout her career to help people less fortunate than she was.

“I will miss her enormously – as will the Conservative Party and the House of Lords.”
