Further set-back for Wembley

There has been a further set-back to the building of the new Wembley Stadium after the resignation of the construction firm’s chief executive.

John Roberts from Multiplex stepped down following the news that costs for the national stadium could be “significantly” higher than previously thought.

Earlier this year Multiplex announced that the Wembley project would not make a profit and losses are now expected to exceed the $38 million the Roberts family had previously agreed to cover.

Despite speculation that the stadium will not be completed for the May 2006 FA Cup final, a spokesman for Multiplex said: “We are still very confident that we will meet our contractual obligations”.
