Rooney is children's choice for Prime Minister

Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney is children's choice for Prime Minister, according to a new poll.

The teenage prodigy came out ahead of novelist JK Rowling's character Harry Potter, former Busted singer Charlie Simpson, McFly star Danny Jones and current PM Tony Blair.

Big issues for children in the run-up to the general election were bullying and animal cruelty, according to the survey for Cartoon Network TV channel. Children were also concerned about violence in schools and crime, while one in five expressed concerns about global terrorism.

Down on the list of priorities for youngsters were immigration, the economy, world peace and improved school dinners.

Nearly seven out of ten children (68 per cent) successfully named Tony Blair as leader but only six per cent could recognise the face of Conservative leader Michael Howard.

Only one per cent knew the face of Liberal Democrat counterpart Charles Kennedy.
